VeganMoFo: Boo and a slap!

October 26, 2008

A group of moms I belong too had a Green Halloween party tonight for the kids. It was about homemade or recycled  costumes and healthier treats for the kids. I decided to do the carmel corn from Hooray Vegan and the candy corn from The Urban Housewife. I didn’t want to use food coloring and feed a bunch of hyperactive toddlers dye AND sugar, so I opted to make candy ghosts instead of the traditional looking candy corn and leave out the food coloring. It was pretty time consuming, but they turned out really good and they were just so cute. There was only one other family there that’s vegan, but I wanted to spread the vegan love anyway. I could have opted to buy candy, but no, I have to go all out and make my own. It’s a personal problem I have with parties and bringing food. I always have to do something over the top. On another note, the other vegan mom made this awesome bread that she even gave us to take home! My youngest couldn’t get enough. I’ll have to snag the recipe from her blog  when she posts it!

Oh and you have to try this sandwich I made for lunch today. It was sooo good. I’m thinking of making another one right now. I’m calling it a SLAP! It’s Seitan O’Greatness, lettuce, alfalfa sprouts and mediterranean pickles on Genesis bread. I cannot impart to you how excellent this sandwich was. I sliced the seitan thin and this batch was a spicier one. When paired with the spicey pickles, YUM!

Oooooh, that sandwich looks AMAZING! And I actually have a log of Seitan O-Greatness sitting in my fridge right now. I’m thinking a quick trip to the store for the pickles and I have lunch for tomorrow. It looks like you have some creaminess on the lettuce, is that veganaise or just the way the camera captured the sprouts?

And I love, love, love your little ghosts! Thanks for warning me that they are time consuming because I’m slightly tempted to try making them!

Ok so your Candy Corn Ghosts didn’t even make it home!! Hubby ate some while we were getting in the car and the rest when we stopped off at the store on the way home! Luckily I did get one ghost in and it was GOOD! I used to despise candy corn but this was great! So was the carmel corn, ymmmmm.

I’m going to try and post the Plantain Raisin bread tommorow if not then for sure Monday!

How long did the ghosts take?

  4. Heather Says:

April: You actually can’t see the sprouts in the pic, it’s vegenaise, the greatest of all vegan condiments!

Monique: The dough didn’t take long at all, it was forming the ghosts and actually getting used to working with it. I actually only made half of the dough into ghosts and it took me 2 hours. I imagine cutting them to look like candy corn a much easier process, but then you have the extra kneading to even out the food coloring so who knows? There’s probably an easier way to do the ghosts. I formed each of them by hand which is what took so long.

Great ghosts!!! I recently made the same candy corn recipe, but made pumpkins…love the ghost idea! I feel another batch coming on…

I’m happy I read this post today – I’m not alone :). I’ve been plotting for a year now to make Melisser’s candy corn and the time is upon me. I’m doing it tomorrow or Thursday. I know it’s going to take forever. I have natural food colorings (beets, blueberries, etc), so it won’t be too bad, but it will be messy.

The ghosts are really cute, what a good idea. The sandwich looks really great, especially the bread. YUM.

  7. OMG those ghosts are adorable!! YAY for Halloween food! Thank you so much for your comment on my blog! 🙂
